Trump Signals Possible U.S.–Iran Agreement Within a Week as Efforts to Reopen Strait of Hormuz Continue

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump signaled that the United States and Iran could finalize an agreement within the next week to extend an interim ceasefire and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, projecting confidence about the diplomatic track despite renewed regional tensions and conflicting signals from Tehran.

The potential agreement comes amid heightened international concern over security in the Middle East, the stability of global energy markets, and the risk that continued confrontation between Washington and Tehran could trigger a wider regional conflict. The Strait of Hormuz, a narrow waterway connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman, is one of the world’s most strategically important maritime routes. A substantial share of global oil shipments passes through the strait, making its security essential to energy-exporting countries, shipping companies, and major economies worldwide.

Trump’s comments suggest that Washington sees an opportunity to convert the temporary ceasefire into a more durable diplomatic arrangement. However, the possibility of reaching an agreement within days does not necessarily mean that both governments have resolved the fundamental disagreements that have fueled tensions for years. Negotiators would still need to establish mutually acceptable terms, clarify each side’s obligations, and determine how compliance would be monitored.

At the center of the immediate diplomatic effort are two closely connected objectives: maintaining the ceasefire and restoring safe, reliable passage through the Strait of Hormuz. These issues are linked because maritime security depends not only on the absence of direct military confrontation but also on the willingness of both sides to avoid actions that could threaten commercial vessels or disrupt international shipping.

For Washington, reopening the waterway would represent an important step toward reducing uncertainty in global energy markets. Any prolonged interruption to shipping through the strait could increase transportation costs, complicate oil deliveries, and contribute to price volatility. Countries that rely heavily on imported energy would be particularly exposed to such disruptions, while oil-producing nations could also face difficulties transporting their exports to international customers.

For Tehran, negotiations over the ceasefire and maritime access would involve its own strategic and political considerations. Iranian officials would likely seek assurances regarding the terms of any arrangement and the consequences of compliance. The Iranian government’s public statements and negotiating positions will therefore be important in determining whether the optimism expressed by the American president translates into a concrete diplomatic outcome.
